ON FOOT

  • Drivers need plenty of time to slow down and stop, especially in wet weather.
  • Using a mobile phone to call or text a friend while you are walking can easily distract you from the dangers of traffic.
  • You should walk one behind the other at bends in the road, or at night, or if there is a lot of traffic.
  • When school crossing patrols are controlling the traffic, wait until they signal you to cross the road. Always cross in front of them.
  • Watch out for hidden driveways when walking on the pavement.
  • Never cross roads on bends, or just before the top of a hill, unless you have a really good view.
  • Every day 26 children aged 7-10 are injured on our roads! The first step to staying safe is learning the Green Cross Code.

ON WHEELS

  • You must not carry a passenger on your cycle unless it is specially designed to do so.
  • When riding your bike, wear fluorescent clothes in the daytime and reflective clothes in the dark. If you're out at night, make sure you're bright!
  • Almost twice as many boys as girls are killed, or seriously injured in pedestrian and cycle accidents!
  • If riding with others on busy, or narrow roads, you should ride one behind the other.
  • Make sure that you can always see and hear well. Don’t listen to your personal stereo or talk on the phone when you are riding your bike.
  • A bike that is too big or too small can affect your balance, so make sure your bike is the right size.
  • You should never lead an animal whilst cycling.
  • If cycling training is offered at your school, do sign up for it! It's really fun and will teach you new skills!

ON THE ROAD

  • It is against the law to not wear a seatbelt in a car.
  • Triangular road signs are WARNING signs! Find this, and everything else you need to know about staying safe on the roads, in the Handbook.
  • When someone's driving, red and amber traffic lights mean STOP! Look out for these and other signals next time you're in the car.
  • Road signs with BLUE circles tell you what you MUST do! Signs with RED circles tell you what you MUST NOT do!
